We publish clear, source-led explanations of how events, discoveries, beliefs, technologies and decisions continue to shape ordinary life. We are not a breaking-news service or a partisan platform. Our work begins where the daily headline usually ends: with the longer chain of cause, consequence and uncertainty.
What we do
Each article asks three underlying questions. Then: what can responsibly be established about what happened? Therefore: which effects lasted, and through what mechanism? What next: what should a careful reader watch, reconsider or refuse to assume?
These labels guide our reasoning without forcing every story into the same mould. History does not provide automatic instructions. It can reveal inherited constraints, delayed consequences and recurring incentives—but analogy must never be mistaken for proof.
Editorial standards
Accuracy takes priority over speed, novelty and conversion. Headlines must accurately represent the article. We distinguish documented fact, scholarly or expert interpretation, our editorial analysis and informed possibility through explicit wording and context.
Before publication, substantive pieces are checked for internal consistency, source support, misleading certainty, missing context and avoidable harm. Sensitive subjects—including politics, belief, health, conflict, science and identity—receive added scrutiny. We acknowledge legitimate disagreement without manufacturing false balance where evidence is strong.
Sources and citation practice
Every substantive article carries a reference list. We use the Harvard author–date convention and prefer primary records, peer-reviewed research, scholarly books, official data and established institutions. In-text attribution is used when a claim, interpretation or number depends on a particular source.
Further Reading is reserved for useful works not directly cited. We do not fabricate quotations, statistics, scenes, experts, studies or bibliographic details. When a source is inaccessible or a claim cannot be adequately verified, we narrow the claim, label the uncertainty or leave it unpublished.
Authorship and accountability
Then and Therefore Editorial Team is the institutional byline for collaboratively researched and edited work. It does not imply a fictional staff writer. Named contributors will be identified only with their knowledge and permission, and their relevant conflicts of interest will be disclosed.
Technology, AI and editorial oversight
Research and production may be supported by software, including artificial intelligence. Technology may help organise material, identify questions or accelerate drafting, but it does not hold editorial responsibility. Published claims, sources, language and corrections remain the responsibility of the publication.
We do not use automation as authority. Generated text, summaries and references must be reviewed before publication. Where synthetic media could materially affect how evidence is understood, it will be labelled.
Our production system uses structured article records so editorial status, sources, changes, images, relationships and publication metadata can be checked consistently. Automation may move approved records between production stages, but it may not bypass source requirements, editorial review or correction history.
Search and answer-engine accessibility
We structure pages so readers, search engines and AI answer systems can identify the article title, institutional author, publication and update dates, topic, summary, reference record and canonical source. This includes semantic page structure, descriptive metadata and machine-readable article and breadcrumb information.
Discoverability does not change the evidence standard. We do not create repetitive pages for keywords, hide instructions from readers, purchase conclusions or present uncertain claims as settled merely because a sharper sentence may rank better. When an answer system cites us, the canonical article and its visible references remain the record readers should inspect.
Corrections and updates
Readers may report a suspected error by emailing corrections@thenandtherefore.com with the article title, disputed passage and supporting source. We review the substance rather than the status of the person raising it.
Material factual corrections are noted on the article with the date and nature of the change. Significant additions or reframing receive an update note. Silent correction is limited to spelling, formatting and other changes that do not alter meaning.
Commercial independence
Reader trust is the publication’s primary asset. Sponsors may support a clearly labelled series or topic area, but they cannot purchase a conclusion, suppress relevant evidence or approve editorial copy. Paid placements, affiliate relationships and advertising will be disclosed where the reader encounters them.
Recommendations must earn their place editorially before they can earn revenue. Affiliate compensation does not change the price paid by the reader, and commercial relationships will be recorded in a public disclosure. Core standards apply equally to free, member and sponsored work.
Advertising, when introduced, will use a small number of reserved placements between major editorial units. It will not interrupt the opening, mimic an article card, split a source list, cover the page, autoplay sound or appear inside the article’s conclusion. Sponsored work will carry a disclosure before the reader reaches its argument.
